About

The Harmonium.

The harmonium is a keyboard instrument widely used in Indian classical music, devotional music (bhajans), and Carnatic and Hindustani traditions. Originally from Europe, it was adopted and adapted in South Asia where it became central to musical practice.

A real harmonium works by pumping bellows with one hand while pressing keys with the other. Air flows through metal reeds to produce sound. Different stops and reed configurations create varying timbres.

This digital version faithfully reproduces the harmonium sound using a recorded sample with real-time pitch shifting. It supports the full range of notes used in Indian classical music, complete with Carnatic swaram notation.
